GEORGE COLEMAN JR

At seven years old master drummer Max Roach gave George Coleman Jr his first set of drums.  The background music of his childhood was set to the harmonic sophistication of his father, George (“Big George”) Coleman’s saxophone and the classic blues of his mother Gloria’s bass, piano, organ and vocal work.  After George’s graduation from New York’s prestigious High School of Music and Art he continued his musical studies with jazz masters such as Sam Ulano, Michael Carvin, Harold Mabern, and Jamil Nasser.  Never one to limit himself intellectually George earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

None of George’s teachers was more influential than the master percussionist Billy Higgins.  Under his tutelage George’s conceptual understanding of both the drums and the music he plays has broadened, leading Higgins to call him, “one of the most talented and creative young drummers on the New York Jazz scene.”

As a bandleader, writer, filmmaker, and technician George always has an exciting project in the works such as the new album Resurgence which will be released in late February 2023.  Recorded at Trading8’s Recording Studio in Paramus, NJ, Resurgence features many tracks that were written by George Coleman Jr.  Additionally, three tracks on the album were originally written by George’s father.  George Coleman Jr hopes his arrangements revitalize these classics with a modern twist.  Resurgence features singles that are already available on all platforms such as “Amsterdam After Dark”, “Blue Inside Out”, and “Mabe” (written in honor of George’s mentor and his father’s childhood friend, Harold Mabern).
